The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), a Hindu nationalist organization, led the protest advocating for the removal of Aurangzeb's tomb, asserting that it symbolizes historical oppression of Hindus. The VHP proposed replacing the tomb with a memorial honoring Maratha rulers. During the demonstration, participants burned effigies of Aurangzeb and his tomb while chanting slogans supporting its demolition.

This led to counter-protests by Muslim groups, during which stones were reportedly thrown at police officers. The ensuing violence resulted in injuries to at least 15 police personnel, one of whom was in serious condition, and damage to numerous vehicles.

In response to the violence, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis condemned the unrest and instructed law enforcement to take stringent measures to maintain law and order.
